CCTV and Access Control

It makes sense to combine access control systems with a CCTV setup in the security environment of today. Combining CCTV and access control systems enables the security system to provide more intelligent video data. Think of a proximity card-based access control system, for instance. Without a CCTV system, a lost or stolen card might be used to gain entrance to a facility by someone who shouldn’t have it. The access control system wouldn’t discover anything amiss, even if building inhabitants could ultimately notice intruders inside. Now consider a CCTV system that is connected with an access control system. IP video cameras, maybe with advanced video analytics software, would be used in such a setup. There are several configurations that may be used for an integrated access control and CCTV system. When staff members use their proximity cards to enter, one option is for the CCTV equipment to record the entrance. The camera system may detect whether the individual using the card is truly the one who is allowed to use it using video analytics. In that case, the system may sound an alert. Some facilities might also wish to permanently log and save video from the entrances every time the access control system is engaged, as opposed to recording and storing hours of material that can be difficult to sift through.
